Our First Session

This morning in our teacher training/discipleship meeting, Charles and I developed a list of discussion questions (affectionately DQ's) for the opening session of "Decision Making God's Way". It is based on a book by the same name written by Dr. Gary Meadors. Here they are; I thought that they might spark some good posts and dicussion here:

DQ’s for teaching DMGW
As always, each of these discussion questions is intended to make you think. There should always be Biblical thought given to each answer and Scriptural support is strongly encouraged!

Intro:

  1. What do you understand about God’s will? Is there a general will of God? How is it known? Is there a specific will of God? How is it known?
  2. What are your goals for this class? What do you hope to understand better? What area of own personal walk are you hoping to benefit or improve?
  3. Why is the purpose-driven life (one lived according to God’s will) so attractive to us? What is so appealing about the statement “God has a wonderful plan for your life”? Is this simply an evangelistic baited hook or can we really deliver on revealing such a plan?
  4. What is a biblical world view and values set? How does having these protect a person? (p.13) Have you ever been caught up in this kind of trouble (clarifying life’s questions and challenges)?
  5. What are the personal benefits of knowing the will of God? Are there any corporate advantages?

So, engage with one of these (or more) questions. I'd love to move this classroom into cyberspace! :)

Discerning and doing God's Will with you,

Mike

OK, I think that "a biblical world view" is all about being immersed in a personal relationship with God. If God (and the instruction manual that's included) are at the center of our lives, how can we not have a bibilical world view?
If you are truly focused in this way, it would be impossible to become caught up in the snares that Satan lays throughout life. There are no "grey areas". The bible is black and white. period.
Think of Jesus and how the Pharisees tried repeatedly to trip him up. Because of his knowledge and understanding of his father, he was able to respond (rather than react) to their traps right away. Never once did he say, "hmm. that's a good question. let me get back to you on that one."
Wow, much easier to type than to live out! I'm amazed by the huge returns that I get out of my meager investment in a relationship with Christ.

Working towards total immersion,
Thad

I having been chewing on how to respond to this and keep getting hung up on the first question. I think Thad is on the right track. Immersion is key -not dipped or sprinkled or even once a long time ago but constantly surrounded and diving deep into Gods word-listening to Him and talking to Him in prayer. Abiding in Christ. There must be a much greater biblical influence then worldly influence- ie. media, etc.
Romans 12:2; Ephesians 4:23
Have the mind of Christ in you-
1 Corinthians 2:16; Phillipians 2:5

As far as no grey areas I'm not convinced that there are no grey areas. Paul seemed to think that there were some things that were ok for mature christians but might cause an immature believe to stumble. There are black and white biblical principles that should be used to make choices. Thad, what version of scripture do you read? What style of music do you prefer? Do you smoke? Drink alcohol? Wine? Does your wife wear pants to church or only skirt/dress? Do you attend a GARBC church? (sorry Mike) What are the black and white answers?

I can't remember the rest of the questions.

Oh yeah will of God
1. suffer
2. salvation
3. sanctification
4. sexual purity
5. s -theres one more I think but can't remember it Maybe I'll try to find that little booklet -how to know the will of God by MacAurthur I think. I used it for AWA one year.

Guys,
I think that you are both hinting at the answer to Q4. You are both suggesting that your worldview is theo-centric -- immersed in a growing, thriving relationship with God as its center. You have also both hinted at the fact that a biblical worldview (a life lived according to God's Word) is sure to follow a theo-centric WV. I would have to agree that you have nailed it! How would you both handle the term "Christian worldview"? Is it synonomous with theo-centric WV, or Biblical WV (I think Thad said yes)? or is it broader than these two? or narrower? Is it possible to have a Christian worldview w/o a biblical or theo-centric one?

I am not sure that I would say that there are no grey areas. The issues that are outside the realms of "thus sayeth the Lord" are at least charcoal and eggshell! :) If there are gray areas (notice that there is even a variation of spelling with this word), they still need to be based on Scriptural principle! This tension (show me where in the Bible it says "thou shalt not smoke") is the most common attack on a biblical worldview by those who don't hold one. It is also one of the most common teen challenges to the "my parent's worldview". We need to be claer about what we mean when we say the Bible is the source for all matters of faith and practice.

thanks for engaging,
don't forget the others on the list, :)

That just totally shows God's sense of justice when you try to flame your bro and you misspell a word. Hah! right back on my own head!

Found: God's Will -by John MacAurther jr. 61 pages long
buy it -read it- give it to your class(or to your protoge')

"Is God like the Easter bunny that hides His will so we have to search for it like eggs? your getting warrrmer!"

1-salvation you can't know His will unless you know Him personally
2-spirit-filled/saturated with the word -- a glove cannot do anything unless filled by a hand
When Peter was filled with the hs he had the same power as when he was with Jesus
-planned neglect -neglect everything not related to your goal
3.sanctification 1thes4:3-7
a.sexual sin
b.self-control
4.submission (funny that was the one that I couldn't remember :) before you become a missionary you must first be a submissionary.
5.suffering- persecution for proclaiming Christ. When was the last time that happened? Phil 1:29
"if you are waltzing through life comfortably, it either means that you are not living a godly life or you are living it out in the bushes (or bubble)somewhere where the ungodly world can't see it. ouch.

If you are doing these five principles then do whatever you want. You can't steer a ship thats tied to the dock! get moving!

Oh and be thankful! 1 Thes 5:18

-Thanks I needed that refresher. Sporcic loved that book. He was a black/white guy too.
