Life-Draining Pursuits

This is the title block for a message that I am teaching to our ministry team. It will probably take two weeks to complete. The four pursuits that drain the life right out of life do the same to ministry. Solomon tried to pursue a negative quartet of things in life and recorded the draining conclusion in Ecclesiastes. Try your hand at guessing the four leaches (pursuits that drain the life out of ministry). This is open book, so go look in Ecclesaistes 1, 2. :)

Interested in getting the answers and/or the .ppt? Email me or post your guesses with a request and I'll send it to you!

Please pray for the training that will occur in the next 5 weeks (Wed's) as we prep for deploying two summer ministry teams; one in Springville, NY, and one in Tyrone, NY.

Heading on out of the comfort zone, pursuing vital ministry,

Here's my guess - with the help of the internet
A) Wisdom - Ecc 1:13 - but found it did not change the unchangeable - v.15 - and caused pain - vs.16-18; 2:14-17
B) Pleasure - 2:1,2 - also futile
C) Wine - 2:3
D) Labor - 2:4-11 - became a workaholic - yet again it was vain

Good answer dad. What was that last one again?? Hmmm? I had 3 out of the four that you did. I wasn't convinced on the wine one yet. I had wisdom pleasure and work and possibly food and drink as my fourth.

Is it just me or are these 4 things that drain the life out of ministry the same things that make up ministry? Seems tho me that the problem occurs when one or more of these things is excessive. Kinda like anything else; good thins can be bad if they have higher priority than your pusuit of God.

a) intellectualism -- the pursuit of wisdom for information's sake; sitting and soaking

b) personal pleasures -- the pursuit of fun, excitement, social interaction; the country club mentality; WINE fits herein

c) accumulated possessions -- the pursuit of more buildings, bodies and/or bucks; the draw of growing bigger for bigger's sake; efficiency over effectiveness

d) personal achievments -- the pursuit of accolades and importance; plans/goals/workaholic driven

Thanks for the posts. Which one are you most susceptible to? I have real struggles to keep a) and d) reined in.
